OUR ETHOS

RESPONSIBILITY

Roomie is a 100% female owned and operated small independent business with our customers, community, and social responsibility the priority in all we do. Our Good Roomie Program in collaboration with UPPAREL promotes recycling and giving your sheets another life through donation, re-purposing, and biodegradable initiatives.

SUSTAINABILITY

We work exclusively with GOTS and Fairtrade manufacturers that uphold the highest industry standards in environmental and social responsibility code of conduct who are independently certified and regularly audited. Sustainability is not a buzzword for Roomie, it is embedded in our brand philosophy and design practices, integral to every decision we make across the business. We believe in quality over quantity and practice purposeful production through our small batches to ensure limited waste.

COMMUNITY

Cultivating an engaged and inclusive community is at the heart of Roomie. We make products for spaces that bring people together and inspire connection. Our community share their spaces, thoughts, and opinions. This undeniably extends to our suppliers and their local community with the utmost respect for the people and the environment from which our products are made.

QUALITY, ALWAYS!

The quality of our products is everything. From fabrication and design to customer experience, we strive for the highest quality in all facets, only releasing product when we are 100% sure it will add value and bring you joy.

The cotton used for our sheets is 100% organic and GOTS certified.

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) stands out as the most widely recognised and comprehensive standard available within the textile industry. By opting for GOTS, individuals are ensuring a range of social and environmental benefits, including the exclusion of GMO seeds, harmful chemicals, and child labour. Moreover, GOTS ensures fair wages and ethical working conditions, along with the use of non-toxic dyes.

Organic farming plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change by implementing regenerative crop rotation techniques that foster the development of vibrant, biodiverse soils. These enriched soils possess two significant benefits: they have an increased capacity to retain water and act as a reservoir for carbon storage. Organic farming eliminates the need for toxic and energy-intensive inputs, such as fertilisers, reducing the environmental burden.

Made to last and with love, our sheets use hand picked, long-staple cotton which means the fibres have not been manipulated so they fray less, pill less, wrinkle less, and even fade less than fabrics made with their short-staple counterparts. Buttery soft from the start, their strength and durability mean that you will get a longer, more useful life from your bedding and at the end, our sheets are biodegradable.

Not only is Roomie cotton the ideal choice for the environment and the maker but it’s also naturally hypoallergenic, better for your skin and regulates your temperature all year round.

NO CHEMICALS

Organic cotton farming avoids chemicals that are toxic for humans and wildlife - GOTS certified cotton ensures the safety of the workers and avoids farmers falling into debt to purchase pesticides. It protects the local waterways from being poisoned which endangers the community and ecosystem. And it's safer for the end consumer making it gentle on your skin and hypoallergenic.

SAVE WATER

Organic cotton reduces water consumption by 91% compared to conventionally grown cotton. Better yet, 95% of the water used to make organic cotton fibres is "green water," which means it's collected from rain and the moisture stored in soil.

LOCAL COMMUNITY

Because our supplier does not use toxic chemicals it helps build back the soil structure and its fertility. This means that their farmers can grow other produce alongside cotton providing plentiful and diverse food supply for their families and the rest of the town.

LOW EMISSIONS

Growing organic cotton emits about 46% less CO2 than conventional cotton. This is due to crop rotation techniques that keeps carbon from entering the atmosphere and helps the fight against climate change. Organic cotton also has a positive impact on our planet by using 62% less energy to produce.

BIODEGRADABLE

The dyes we use for colouring are biodegradable, low impact, environmentally friendly chemical dyes, permitted and certified safe to use under GOTS. This means they are safer than those used in conventional textiles, they reduce the environmental impact of textile manufacturing, they do not contain heavy metal and are not considered harmful to humans. The buttons we use on our duvet covers are also biodegradable and made from the Corozo nut.

Our supplier is a family run business that has been operating for over two decades and was established with the vision of creating alternative job opportunities for people working in the dangerous fireworks industry. Now with a team of 400, they are providing the local community a safe and secure way to earn a healthy living with job and life skills training for men and women to become financially independent.

The organic and natural methods of production not only protect the local environment, wildlife and community from water poisoning but also restores nutrients to the soil. This means farmers can grow other produce for income and they also receive the Fairtrade Premium offering them better living opportunities for themselves and their families.

In line with their GOTS and Fairtrade certifications, the wage received for a standard workweek by any worker is enough to allow a decent living standard for them and their family. This should cover costs of food, water, accommodation, education, medical care, clothing, transport, and any other essential needs.

1% FOR THE PLANET

Roomie is a proud member of the international organisation where we contribute one percent of our annual sales to environmental non-profits dedicated to protecting the environment.

FAIRTRADE

Fairtrade is the most trusted ethical label in the world. It is a system of certification that aims to ensure a set of standards are met in the production and supply of a product or ingredient. For farmers and workers, it means better rights, safer working conditions and fairer pay. For Roomies, it means high quality, ethically produced products.

THE GOOD ROOMIE PROGRAM

As part of our commitment to sustainability, we offer a recycling program in partnership with UPPAREL giving sheets another life through donation, repurposing and biodegradable initiatives. Roomies who join this program receive a discount off their next order.

Each Roomie product is packed in a 100% organic cotton drawstring bag made from bulk production offcuts. We use recycled paper in our postcards and swing tags which are tied using natural cotton rope without unnecessary safety pins. Every order is sent out in biodegradable satchels or recycled cardboard boxes which are 100% home compostable.

Roomie prioritises the safeguarding of individuals' rights and welfare within our supply chain. Our unwavering commitment lies in upholding excellent labour standards and protecting human rights for all individuals employed through Roomie operations. This entails ensuring that all employees receive equitable wages, appropriate compensation, and operate within approved working conditions. We condemn any manifestation of Modern Slavery, such as the recruitment of workers into forced or bonded labour through violence, deception, threats, or coercion. Additionally, we oppose practices such as descent-based labour, child labour, or any conduct that undermines the freedoms and rights of individuals.
